1.4105 is a free-machining ferritic stainless steel containing about 17% chromium with sulphur and a small molybdenum addition. This datasheet presents the material within the Werkstoff-Nummer (DIN / EN) designation system.
With nominally 17% chromium, added sulphur and a small molybdenum content, 1.4105 is essentially the free-machining version of 1.4016 (X6Cr17): the sulphur forms manganese-sulphide inclusions that improve chip breaking and machinability, while the molybdenum partly offsets the resulting loss of corrosion resistance. Being a low-carbon ferritic grade it is magnetic and cannot be hardened by heat treatment, and offers properties similar to 1.4016 with markedly better machinability. It is widely used for automatic-lathe production of small turned parts.
Typical applications include screws, nuts, fasteners, toolholders, ball valves, fittings, furniture parts, and components for the petrochemical, automotive, food and machinery industries.

| Environment | Performance | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Atmospheric / general | Moderate | Below 1.4016 (sulphur reduces resistance) |
| Organic and nitric acids | Good | At low concentrations |
| Chloride pitting / crevice | Limited | Sulphide inclusions are initiation sites |
| Chloride stress-corrosion cracking | Very Good | Ferritic — largely immune |
| Seawater | Not recommended | — |
Corrosion resistance is moderate and below 1.4016; not resistant to intergranular corrosion. The molybdenum addition partly offsets the loss caused by the sulphur.
A ferritic free-machining grade; cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Properties are set by annealing.
Anneal Heat to approximately 760–820 °C and cool slowly. Avoid prolonged exposure in the 400–540 °C range (475 °C embrittlement).
Not suitable for welding — the high sulphur content promotes hot cracking.
| Welding Process | Applicability | Filler / Consumable |
|---|---|---|
| GTAW / TIG | Not recommended | Austenitic (309) if unavoidable |
| GMAW / MIG | Not recommended | — |
| Brazing | Preferred join method | — |
The free-machining sulphur addition makes this grade unsuitable for structural welding.
Machining Guidelines
| Parameter | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Machinability | Excellent — designed for automatic lathes |
| Chip breaking | MnS inclusions break chips; high speeds and feeds possible |
| Tooling | Standard carbide or HSS; good tool life |
| Coolant | Ample flood coolant |
Forming Processes
| Process | Notes |
|---|---|
| Cold forming | Limited — sulphur reduces ductility |
| Hot forming | ~1130–1050 °C forging range; anneal afterward |
| Industry | Typical Components | Key Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Screw machining | Screws, nuts, fasteners, turned parts | Extensive machining |
| Petrochemical | Toolholders, fittings, valve parts | Machinability + moderate corrosion resistance |
| Food / machinery | Ball valves, machine parts | Machinability + corrosion resistance |
| Furniture / appliances | Decorative and functional parts | Machinability + cost |
